The solar shading canopy plays a critical role in shaping the pedestrian experience of the Neville Bonner Bridge. Conceived as a continuous ribbon hovering above the suspended deck, the canopy provides protection from Brisbane’s subtropical sun while maintaining openness to views of the river, city, and surrounding parklands.
Louvreclad’s Platinum Series® aluminium cassette cladding delivers a crisp, consistent finish that complements the bridge’s elegant structural form, while the integration of Wickham Series® 200mm elliptical louvres introduces softness and rhythm to the canopy, enhancing both visual quality and solar control.

Delivering the canopy required careful technical coordination to ensure seamless integration with the bridge structure. A custom crab claw fixing system was developed to conceal fixings beneath the canopy, preserving clean sightlines and reinforcing the lightweight appearance of the structure. This bespoke solution allowed the cladding and louvres to read as a unified architectural element, while meeting structural, wind, and environmental performance requirements.
