Merlin Series Operable louvres ensure optimal comfort for learning

‘Engaging Curious minds’  The Scotch College Science motto became the inspiration throughout the design of the new Sir Zelman Cowen  Centre of Science. Shortlisted  for the 2017 World Architecture Festival, the building has been designed to last 100 years, in the hope to prepare children for a lifetime of learning. To ensure optimal comfort for learning, operable louvres were specified for maximum solar control at all times during the day. Louvreclad designed, engineered, manufactured this bespoke solution utilizing Merlin Series® – 450mm elliptical powder coated aluminium operable louvres and worked closely with the Kane Construction team to ensure they were all installed on time and within program deadlines. The Operable louvres were fitted with actuators which were connected back to the buildings BMS and temperature sensors to control the amount of solar radiation entering the building and maintain optimum comfort levels for teacher staff rooms and student Classrooms.  Blades move from open to closed in about 14 minutes. The flexibility achieved with operable louvres is incredible compared to fixed. The Merlin Series® provides the ultimate in spanning and cantilevering capabilities. It’s unique 450mm width enables blade spans of over 4 metres which can be of paramount importance in bespoke architectural features. Another successful example of a Louvreclad bespoke solution which the school and students are extremely pleased with.
