Carlingford Public High School

Elliptical louvres provide optimal sun protection

As the builder contracted to complete the design & construction of a new 3 storey building at Carlingford Public School, Grindley Construction brought Louvreclad in to design, engineer, supply and install the vertical sun screening to the East and West facades. After discussing in detail with both the client & the builder, it was ascertained that there were two key drivers for the shading solution. Firstly, the design needed to meet the requirements of Section J 2.5; ‘to be capable of restricting at least 80% of summer solar radiation’ and secondly, they wanted a fresh bold architectural feature to elevate the aesthetics of the building. Louvreclad’s design consisted of the following; Louvreclad Caprice Series® 934 horizontal sun hoods to the northern façade & vertical Louvreclad Ocean Series® 300mm elliptical louvres – aluminium powder coated blades, framed within a Caprice Series 409 shroud, to provide shading to the East and West Facades.

The horizontal sun shades were angled to ensure maximum sun protection, while the vertical ellipsoid blades were angled at 60 degrees and continuous over two levels.

The blades were spigot fixed to the horizontal Caprice Series® top and bottom with additional mid-height support provided by a custom cut 60 degree hold crab claw, alongside an essential 20mm thermal expansion break. Multiple powder coat colours  were selected to respond aesthetically to the surrounding environment. All in all this project is a successful illustration of a Louvreclad designed and engineer-certified, complete building sun shade solution.
