This stunning cylindrical shaped apartment tower in fish lane provides an iconic new sculptural landmark to South Brisbane.

The building itself is constructed as 4 large cylindrical forms, joined together by a single glazed tower, with smaller cylindrical flutes integrated into a living green wall cladding the exterior.

Louvreclad were contacted by Aria Property Group in the early stages of the project to provide a custom solution to meet the incredible design concept. Initially specified as masonry pipes, our team offered a solid aluminium alternative, with the benefits of lighter weight and lower maintenance solution.

Asked to produce concept sketch options, our team provided these along with some initial costings, which were met with good feedback. Hutchinson Builders then got in touch once they were ready to award the project, leading to further collaboration to develop and clarify the solution.

Some of the key challenges of the design were the multi-colours and the different heights of the flutes, especially where they hung down past the slab edges.

Louvreclad then designed, engineered and constructed a full-scale custom prototype utilizing the Louvreclad Platinum Series® 3mm aluminium sheet to assist with design resolution.

The design originally called for a 400mm flute, however the design team concluded that one complete flute could be achieved out of a standard solid aluminium 1200mm wide sheet, which was then stitch welded. This created savings for the customer, as well as speed of construction for our team.
The design change was approved, and 451 of these 385mm diameter cylindrical pipes simply slotted into each other as they span up the building, from podium to level 6.

Coordination with other sub-contractors lead to another challenge. On one elevation, the solid aluminium flutes were integrated with a living green wall, with lights proposed to sit inside the pipes. This led to Louvreclad coordinating the bracket set-out to suit the green wall system while coordinating with the electricians light fitting details to ensure the light fitting could be inserted into the tubes.

Most of this was achieved by collaborating on the 3D BIM model, which Louvreclad agree is a brilliant way of building buildings!
